• 125g butter
  • 55g caster sugar
  • 180g plain flour


  1. Heat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.

  2. Beat the butter and the sugar together until it is smooth.

  3. Stir in the flour to get a smooth paste.

  4. on a floured surface, gently roll out until the paste is about 1cm thick.

  5. Cut into fingers and place onto a baking tray lined with baking parchment.

  6. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden-brown.

  7. Set aside to cool on a wire rack.

  8. whilst warm, sprinkle sugar on to the shortbreads (doing this whilst the shortbreads are warm helps the sugar stick to the shortbreads)
